Journo: Chelsea striker willing to leave in search of regular game time

Timo Werner willing to leave Chelsea this summer in search of regular game time

Timo Wener ‘will leave’ Chelsea this summer as the German looks for regular game time, according to Sky Sport reporter Florian Plettenberg (h/t Express). The striker expressed his discontent earlier regarding a lack of opportunities with the Blues.

Thomas Tuchel had also fired back at Werner for his comments. The Chelsea manager doesn’t really fancy the 26-year-old. The gaffer’s comments seem to have hit a nerve and now the striker is looking for a way out of the Stamford Bridge side.

Werner hasn’t really lived up to fans’ expectations since moving from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2020. Having made a name for himself as a prolific goalscorer in Germany, the striker has failed to replicate that same form.

His Leipzig days had painted a picture in spectators’ minds. In 158 appearances for the Red Bulls, the German national scored 93 goals.

For Chelsea, the 26-year-old seems to lack composure in front of the goal as well as the quality to make an impact. In his two seasons, Werner has scored just 23 goals in 89 appearances.

While he has been below par in terms of scoring, there’s still a quality player within the German. The striker’s speed and dribbling are great assets when taking on defenders. Werner is also good at providing goals for teammates.

Werner hasn’t lived up to expectations at Chelsea yet.

But Tuchel hasn’t used the German as often in his XI. Last season, the striker started just 15 Premier League games. Kai Havertz, Hakim Ziyech, Christian Pulisic and even Romelu Lukaku were preferred over Wener to feature more often. Raheem Sterling has joined up with the squad this season.

The German has had his moments though for the club. He helped the side get over the line against Real Madrid as we went on to win the Champions League in the 2020/21 season. Werner managed to repeat the heroics once again last season against the Spanish giants, but his efforts fell short.

The 26-year-old is still a decent option to have in the squad, even though fans have been underwhelmed with his Chelsea stint so far.
