Liverpool set to bid for 23-year-old Chelsea target

Transfer News: Liverpool are set to bid for Matheus Nunes amid Chelsea interest

According to journalist Ekrem Konur via Twitter (h/t football. london), Liverpool are set to make a bid for Matheus Nunes amidst interest from Chelsea.

The 23-year-old midfielder has been on the Blues’ radar for quite some time. But it seems their rivals are willing to take one step ahead and open negotiations for the Portuguese international. If the news is true this would come as a blow to Thomas Tuchel, who is currently revamping his squad.

Nunes joined Sporting in 2019 and was promoted to the senior team in 2020. The young midfielder enjoyed a good last season as he made 50 appearances for the club in all competitions, scoring four goals and assisting five more. He played a pivotal role as he helped his side finish second in the league last season.

Sporting are one of the best purveyors of producing young talent. Nunes has been at the club for only three years not but has improved in leaps and bounds. According to Liverpool Echo, the club is said to be looking for a fee in the region of £45 million for the 23-year-old midfielder.

Thomas Tuchel meanwhile has been having a very hectic summer transfer this month. After signing Raheem Sterling and Kalidou Koulibaly, the Chelsea boss is keen on trying to sign Jules Kounde from Sevilla. Hopefully, the deal will get over the line soon.

However, one department where Tuchel has his plate full is the midfield department. The German tactician has a variety of top players to choose from and going after another midfielder makes very little sense. Nunes would make a fine addition to Chelsea’s midfield, but the money that will be spent on him is better utilised elsewhere.

A centre-back and a number nine are the need of the hour and Tuchel will be aware of that. It would be wise for Chelsea to utilise such funds where they are required and not to waste the money just so they can beat their rivals to a player, one they might not need at the moment.

But if Tuchel does bring in the player, it will be interesting to see who departs the club and where and how he deploys the midfielder. Chelsea fans will hope that whatever Tuchel decides will benefit Chelsea in the long run.
