Report: Everton looking to take Chelsea midfielder on loan

Everton are interested in signing Billy Gilmour on loan from Chelsea

Everton have shown interest in signing Chelsea starlet Billy Gilmour on loan this summer. This is according to talkSPORT (h/t Liverpool Echo), who report that the Toffees have the green light to explore such a possibility.

Gilmour was handed his debut by Frank Lampard and it is understood that the player is keen to reunite with his former boss. The Toffees, who narrowly avoided relegation last season, have identified the Scottish international as a potential target for next season.

The 21-year-old spent last season on loan at Norwich City. The Scotland international had a tough time at Carrow Road where he failed to perform on a consistent basis. The midfielder made 24 league appearances for the Canaries, as Norwich failed to avoid relegation.

He was named in the pre-season squad by Thomas Tuchel and it was a chance for him to impress. However, that did not happen as he was sent to train with the Under-23 squad.

This raised the speculation that the Scottish was not part of Tuchel’s plan for next season. Another loan move was mooted for him which is now looking like a possibility.

Should Everton approach Chelsea regarding a move, it is very less likely to be turned down. Tuchel could benefit from the fact that Gilmour will spend his next season in the Premier League. This would give him more time to assess the player and decide on his future.

As for Gilmour, he could have another chance of proving his critics wrong and showing why he is one of the best young talents around.

With N’Golo Kante and Jorginho not getting any younger and Conor Gallagher steadily rising in the pecking order, this could be a very crucial season for Gilmour. If he can perform up to the expected level, he may still have a shot at making it to the Chelsea first team. If not, his future could lie away from Stamford Bridge.

Should the player stay and fight for his place, he is very likely to get very less game time. A move to Everton would bring him close to a manager who trusts him and maybe playing under Lampard again will help him unlock his true potential.
