Chelsea and Spurs show interest in dynamic Newcastle winger

Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur are interested in Allan Saint-Maximin

Chelsea are said to have enquired about the possibility of signing Allan Saint-Maximin this summer. Chelsea rivals Tottenham Hotspur are also said to be interested in the player, according to The Athletic (subscription required) [h/t Express].

Thomas Tuchel is reshaping his squad and has identified Saint-Maximin as a potential target. Rivals Tottenham are also said to be interested in the winger, but with them signing Richarlison, they might not need a new forward.

Saint-Maximin joined Newcastle United from OGC Nice in 2019 and has established himself as a regular player for The Magpies. The former France Under-21 international, Saint-Maximin made 37 appearances for Newcastle last season in all competitions, scoring and assisting five apiece.

Having already signed Raheem Sterling, Tuchel seems to be interested in signing one more attacker. Saint-Maximin would be a very good addition as he can play on both flanks and also as a second striker when required. The 25-year-old can unlock defences with his blistering pace and could ease Chelsea’s attacking woes.

But he will not come cheap. Newcastle values their winger at around £40 million, which could scare off potential suitors. However, that may not be the case with Chelsea as they always negotiate a cut-price fee. A proven Premier League forward, he would help in adding depth to the Blues squad.

The player is one of the fan favourites at St. James’ Park and it is very unlikely for Eddie Howe to sell him easily. However, the lure of the UEFA Champions League and playing for a team fighting for every single piece of silverware could be enough to entice the Frenchman to make a move to Stamford Bridge.

Tuchel will know that he will get a very good player who could serve as backup to the attackers in the team. But he will have to make a move very carefully as he would like to get the best deal possible. A fantastic player with room to increase his potential, Saint-Maximin could develop into one of the most lethal players under Tuchel.

It remains to be seen if Chelsea make a move for the Frenchman. Maybe after Tuchel has added one more defender to his ranks, he might plan on making a move for the attacker. Till then Chelsea fans will be advised to not get their hopes high.
