Chelsea boss Tuchel urged to hand the armband to summer signing

Trevor Sinclair urges Chelsea to name Raheem Sterling as club captain

Speaking on talkSPORT (h/t Express), former Manchester City hero Trevor Sinclair has urged Chelsea to make new signing Raheem Sterling the club captain.

This has come amid reports linking club captain Cesar Azpilicueta to a move to Barcelona this summer. Sterling joined the Blues earlier this month, becoming the club’s first major signing under the new owners.

“I think Raheem Sterling should go in at Chelsea and become the captain. If you look at it, he’s vice-captain of England and the only person who you can say has more experience than him is Thiago Silva and he’s getting on.”

Sterling sealed a £47.5 million move from the Etihad after leaving Pep Guardiola’s side in search of more game time. Sinclair believes that he is a fantastic signing and he can see Chelsea picking up silverware by the end of the next season.

Sinclair further adds that young players always speak positively about Sterling doing something and helping them. He believes the 27-year-old Englishman will be a great captain for the Blues.

“Everyone looks up to him. You hear young players all the time talking about how Raheem Sterling did this and how he helped them with that. I think he could go in and be a great captain for Chelsea.”

While this may be his personal opinion, it is very unlikely to happen. Thomas Tuchel has senior players such as Thiago Silva, Jorginho and N’Golo Kante who all possess leadership qualities. Even another new signing Kalidou Koulibaly could be considered a leader as he has led both former club Napoli and his country Senegal on many occasions.

Sterling could be added to the roster of captains if he performs well and shows leadership skills on the pitch. Just because he has won trophies and is a marquee signing for the club, does not necessarily mean he should be named captain.

Tuchel has bought in Sterling to help him fix his attacking woes from last season. The Blues were inconsistent in front of goals last season, and Sterling could help fix that in the coming season. A clinical finisher, he can create chances as well as finish them as and when required.

With reports of Azpilicueta leaving, it could be interesting to see whom Tuchel names as the captain for next season. There is a possibility that multiple captains could rotate the armband, but Silva could be the one who wears it the most.
