Chelsea have held talks with Brighton & Hove Albion for the transfer of Marc Cucurella this summer
Chelsea have held talks with Brighton & Hove Albion for Marc Cucurella, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano on Twitter. The Blues are ready to swoop in and rival Manchester City for a move.
The Cityzens offered £40 million and are unwilling to pay the Seagulls’ £50 million asking price for the 24-year-old. Chelsea have decided to act fast and have begun negotiations. Levi Colwill could also be part of the conversations.
The contract proposals are being readied. Romano claims that personal terms won’t be an issue and the Blues are confident of coming to an agreement with the Spaniard.
Cucurella joined Brighton from Getafe last season. The versatile defender played primarily as a left-back, although Graham Potter used him in the centre-back role as well on occasions. The attack-minded defender also played a bit further up front on the left.
Coming up through the youth ranks at Barcelona, the 24-year-old has spent most of his time playing in Spain. The Spaniard turned a lot of heads in his debut season in the Premier League. He was a threat to every opposition down the flanks.
Cucurella featured in 39 games for Brighton in the previous campaign. The 24-year-old was a vital member of the Seagulls side that finished ninth. Under Potter, the side have played fluid, attacking football.
Chelsea currently have many options for the left-back spot. Ben Chilwell has returned from his injury. The former Leicester City defender was crucial for Thomas Tuchel’s plans before being sidelined last season.
Marcos Alonso and Emerson Palmieri are the other two options at the German gaffer’s disposal. But their futures aren’t certain, especially the 31-year-old Spaniard’s.

Fans will feel Cucurella is an upgrade on the two and won’t mind Alonso and Emerson leaving if the 24-year-old is signed. He will also be a decent option to bring on in case Chilwell needs time to get back to his best or gets injured again.
