PL newcomers keen on signing 23-year-old Chelsea defensive star

Transfer News: Fulham set to table a bid for Chelsea defender Malang Sarr

According to Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth (h/t Football. London), newly promoted Premier League club Fulham are set to table a bid for fringe Chelsea defender Malang Sarr this summer.

Sarr’s future at Stamford Bridge is not very clear. He did feature in Thomas Tuchel’s plans last season registering sparing appearances now and then and he could have a more prominent role with the Blues this season considering the lack of options.

This does not mean he is going to stay though. The Blues could choose to cash in on him in favour of signing a more established centre-back and with the transfer window still open for one more month, there is enough time for things to change.

Sarr joined Chelsea from Nice in 2020 on a free transfer and was immediately loaned out to Porto for the season. He returned last summer and was a part of the first team squad, registering 21 appearances across all competitions for Tuchel’s team.

One thing that made him valuable to Tuchel’s plans last season was his ability to play in two positions. This shows in the fact that the German tactician deployed the 23-year-old 12 times as a centre-back and nine times as a left-back in his team.

To his credit, Sarr did not disappoint in any of these performances. He was solid for the majority of times he played for the Blues. Although he did not produce anything that was flashy, he did not make many mistakes as well and did his job as a rotation player.

Fulham are set to be really interested in signing the talented Frenchman but they also have other centre-back options on the table with Sarr, not the only one. Hence, if the Blues refused to sell him, it is highly unlikely that the new PL club will push for Sarr.

Thomas Tuchel needs to make a decision with Malang Sarr. Whether he decides to keep him in the squad and reward him for his performances last season or he decides to cash in on him remains to be seen. The German manager could choose to keep him though at least until an alternate is found.
