A report by the Athletic (h/t Football.london) states that Chelsea goalkeeper Willy Caballero will look to move to MLS in January in a bid to secure more playing time.
Caballero signed in the summer of 2017 from Manchester City in a bid to become the Blues’ second-choice goalkeeper. However, the Argentine goalkeeper has failed to challenge for a starting spot.
He has made 38 appearances for Chelsea since his move, with just 11 being in the Premier League. This season, he has played in just one match.
The situation has been further complicated by Chelsea signing Edouard Mendy in the summer. Frank Lampard bought the Stade Rennais goalkeeper to replace Kepa Arrizabalaga in goal. (h/t football.london)
This has left Willy Caballero third in the Chelsea pecking order, and he now wishes to move to the United States of America in a bid to get more playing time.
The 39-year-old believes he has more football left in him and wants a move in January to ensure more game time. Caballero only recently had his contract extended by a year, which now expires in the summer of 2022.
The 2021 MLS season is scheduled to start in March 2021. If a January move happens, it will give the player an opportunity to train and settle down in the MLS.
It is also not surprising that Caballero would look for a move elsewhere. At 39, he is not getting any younger and would want to play as much as he can before he retires.
For Chelsea, any move that sees him leave would not be damaging. While doubts have been raised over Kepa, he is still a very able goalkeeper who can continue to challenge Mendy for the starting spot between the sticks.
