Manchester United and Chelsea to battle it out for Dutch full-back

Manchester United and Chelsea to battle it out for Denzel Dumfries

According to Italian football reporter Marco Barzaghi (h/t Football. London), a bidding war could ensue between Manchester United and Chelsea for talented Inter Milan defender Denzel Dumfries.

Dumfries is highly regarded as one of the best young wing-backs in the world. He is extremely talented and has a huge future in the game. Chelsea are interested in signing the talented Dutchman.

Chelsea already have a great right-back in Reece James. However, the English international tends to get injured way too often and it has reached a stage where the Blues need an alternative.

Dumfries is as close as it can get to Reece James in terms of ability and attacking quality. He has shown in the past that he is extremely efficient going forward and also can hold his own defensively.

However, Chelsea will not have it easy signing Dumfries. Manchester United are also very interested in signing the player and this could actually lead to a transfer battle between the two clubs.

The only problem with Dumfries is that most of his performances have come whilst playing as a wing-back and not exactly in a back four. We still don’t know if he can adapt to this positional change.

Potter has shown in recent weeks an inclination to shift to a back four and Dumfries will most likely have to adapt to playing as a right-back which entails more defensive responsibility.

However, Dumfries is talented enough to adapt to this change. He can show his quality in that position but we must be patient and give him the time he needs to change himself to suit this role.

It remains to be seen if we can beat Man United to the signing of Dumfries. It will definitely be a good signing but it will not be easy to pull this off.
