Chelsea send heartfelt tribute to Gianluca Vialli after the Blues icon died at 58

Chelsea send heartfelt tribute to legendary striker Gianluca Vialli, who passed away after a long-term battle with pancreatic cancer at the age of 58 (Official Chelsea Twitter).

Vialli was initially diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2017 but was given the all-clear. The legendary player was re-diagnosed with the same disease in 2021 and he had to leave the role with the Italian national team in December 2022 to focus on his health.

The Italian played 87 games for Chelsea in three seasons, scoring 40 goals and assisting two. He won both the domestic cup titles with the Blues, along with the UEFA Super Cup.

Vialli was best friends with the current Italy manager Roberto Mancini since their playing days. They both worked together magic to lead the Azzurri to the Euros win in 2021, beating hosts England in the final on penalties.

Apart from Chelsea, the striker played for Italian sides Sampdoria, Juventus and Cremonese. He was a legend at the former, scoring 141 goals and assisting 17 in 328 appearances.

He was a three-time Italian Cup winner with them, along with an Italian Super Cup and an Italian title once. He eventually lifted the Champions League trophy with Juventus in 1996.

If we look at his numbers for Italy, the striker scored 16 goals and provided three assists in 59 appearances. He represented the Azzurri in two World Cups, finishing third in 1990.

Even if we neglect his numbers and achievements, Vialli was a legendary striker in his time. His contribution to the game on and off the field will be remembered forever. Even if he spent only three seasons at Chelsea, the Blues fans will never forget what he did for them.
