Chelsea face battle from European duo for PL defensive star

Leicester City centre-back Caglar Soyuncu attracting interest from Chelsea, Inter Milan and Villarreal

Chelsea are interested in bringing Leicester City centre-back Caglar Soyuncu to Stamford Bridge, according to Turkish journalist Yagiz Sabuncuoglu on Twitter (h/t Express).

However, Inter Milan and Villarreal are also keeping tabs on the 26-year-old. Soyuncu’s existing deal with the Foxes concludes at the end of the season. And clubs have already started negotiations with the Turkey international.

Soyuncu has fallen out of favour under Brendan Rodgers. The 26-year-old did not feature for Leicester towards the end of the 2021/22 campaign. And the Turkish national has not featured for the Foxes this season in the Premier League.

Signing for Leicester from SC Freiburg in 2018, Soyuncu was relatively unused in his debut season. However, with the transfer of Harry Maguire to Manchester United in the summer of 2019, the 26-year-old immediately made a mark for the Foxes.

Soyuncu formed a formidable partnership with Northern Ireland international Jonny Evans in the 2019/20 campaign. The Turkish national also partnered with Chelsea summer 2022 signing Wesley Fofana during their time together at the King Power Stadium. The French centre-back joined Leicester in 2020.

Chelsea signed Fofana in the recent transfer window as the Blues looked to reinforce the backline. Kalidou Koulibaly was also bought from Napoli alongside the 21-year-old.

However, Chelsea have been disappointing this season when it comes to the defensive side of things. The Blues have struggled to keep clean sheets. And the new signings have not had the desired impact.

Thomas Tuchel was sacked off the back of our underwhelming performances in the Premier League. And the 1-0 loss against Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League meant the end of the German manager’s reign in the Stamford Bridge dugout.

Potter has been appointed the head coach. What he thinks of Tuchel’s signings will be interesting to see. And it remains to be seen whether Chelsea will go after Soyuncu in January or next summer to add numbers to the backline.
