Transfer News: Chelsea are working on a deal for Inter Milan star Denzel Dumfries
According to The Athletic (Subscription Required), Chelsea are keen to land Inter Milan star Denzel Dumfries in the ongoing 2022 summer transfer window.
The 26-year-old has been at the Giuseppe Meazza since 2021 and played a huge role in the club’s Coppa Italia win last season. He also enjoyed regular playtime in Serie A as the defending champions eventually finished second behind arch-rivals AC Milan.
Dumfries has proven his quality at the top level and is a force to be reckoned with on the right flank. Solid in defence and astute going forward, he has all the traits needed to function as a modern-day full-back.
Chelsea are in need of defensive reinforcements this summer. The loss of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen has still not been compensated for. To add to their troubles Marcos Alonso and Cesar Azpilicuta could also be on their way out.
Reece James is the club’s first-choice right-back but the Englishman lacks a proper deputy. Bringing in Dumfries will give Tuchel enough strength in depth while also keeping James on his toes.
James is also capable of playing as a centre-back and signing Dumfries will permit Tuchel to deploy the former in a central role. Whether that is one of the tactics on the agenda remains to be seen.
The Blues have enjoyed a rather poor pre-season and will need to start the 2022/23 campaign on a better note. Liverpool and Manchester City remain the teams to beat and unless we can reinforce the squad this summer, matching them might prove difficult.
James too has struggled to impose himself in pre-season and cannot be relied on to start week in, week out. Adding Dumfries’s quality and experience to the roster will be a welcome move for Tuchel and co.

Chelsea and Inter have already done business once this season. Hopefully, Romelu Lukaku’s loan move will have built up enough goodwill between the two sides and will smoothen over negotiations for Dumfries.
