Thomas Tuchel linked with a move to sign 25-year-old boyhood Chelsea fan

Transfer News: Chelsea are interested in Wolves defender Max Kilman

Thomas Tuchel’s hunt for a centre-back continues this summer. According to Chels HQ via Dean Jones Soccer (h/t football.london), Chelsea are interested in Max Kilman of Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Kilman joined Wolves from Maidenhead United on a free transfer in 2018 and has established himself in the team. It is said that the 25-year-old is potentially an alternative to Wesley Fofana. The Blues have been in talks with the player’s representatives.

Considering Fofana’s steep price tag, Tuchel seems to have found an alternative. Kilman played a pivotal role last season for Wolves, making 30 league appearances for the club and helping them finish 10th on the table. He is also said to be a ‘boyhood Chelsea fan’.

A left-footed centre-back, the Englishman can play on the left side of the back three for Chelsea. Capable of playing in the left-back position, he could help provide back-up to Ben Chilwell whenever necessary.

Having already played in the Premier League, Kilman could make a fine addition to the squad. He will most likely be a backup rather than a regular team starter. A world-class centre-back is needed and Kilman is arguably not yet at that level right now.

What should Chelsea do?

Tuchel has interest in signing Fofana and Josko Gvardiol. If the Blues fail to land either one of them, Kilman would then make for a smart alternative.

Whether or not Tuchel makes a move for the player remains to be seen. A decent centre-back with enough PL experience, he has the potential in him and could be a good addition to the squad for next season.

Depth is really important in the squad if Tuchel wishes to compete against the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool. Fans may not feel overly confident if Kilman is made a starter from the get-go but Chelsea can certainly do a lot worse than him if they want to sign a centre-back to increase competition.

Chelsea fans will hope that Tuchel can field a strong eleven during the first few games. Given the standard set by the two teams at the top, the Blues cannot afford to drop points in the first month or their premature hopes for the title could be over.

It remains to be seen what Wolves’ stance is on selling the 25-year-old Englishman considering he is an important cog in Bruno Lage’s machinery.
