Chelsea interested in 21-year-old Everton starlet

Chelsea fall short with £40m bid for Everton striker Anthony Gordon

According to The Times, Chelsea are interested in signing English striker Anthony Gordon from Everton. Todd Boehly is keen on providing the best squad possible for Thomas Tuchel to compete with Manchester City and Liverpool.

The Merseyside starlet enjoyed a breakout 2021/22 season with Everton making 40 appearances to his name. He proved a pivotal part of the team under Frank Lampard as they staved off relegation by the skin of their teeth. Gordon in particular stood out as the Toffees defeated Chelsea and Manchester United to retain their Premier League status.

The beginning of the 2022/23 season has seen Gordon, in the absence of Richarlison, playing the role of a false nine. been one of the Toffees’ best players and will only get better with time. Although Everton are yet to pick up a point, Gordon’s performances have caught the eye.

It has certainly left an impression on Chelsea who have identified him as their new target. Todd Boehly is willing to test Everton’s resolve and bring the player to Stamford Bridge.

According to Ciaran Wiseman (h/t The Sun), Everton might sell their prized asset for a fee worth £50 million. But the price might come down if Armando Broja or Michy Batshuayi are included in the deal.

Will Everton sell Gordon to Chelsea?

Fabrizio Romano confirmed on Twitter that Chelsea have already made an opening bid of £40m for the player. However, it was turned down by Everton. The Blues continue to discuss an improved offer and could even offer players in part exchange.

Lampard has in the past shown interest in the likes of Conor Gallagher and Billy Gilmour. Whether Chelsea will use that to their advantage remains to be seen.

Gordon is a promising player who could reach great heights with the correct guidance. However, the ability to stand out in a poor Everton side is nothing to write home about. While we are all for the club bringing in young prospects, we should not overpay for a player who is far from special.

With just weeks to go in the 2022 summer transfer window, Chelsea find themselves a striker or two short. Whether they will now go all out to land Gordon or play the long game remains to be seen.
