Chelsea told to pay a world-record fee in order to land rival star

Chelsea told to pay a world-record fee to land Wesley Fofana

According to Telegraph (h/t Metro), Chelsea have been told that they will need to pay a world-record fee for a defender to sign Leicester City star Wesley Fofana.

The Foxes have had an underwhelming window where they haven’t signed a player and already lost keeper Kasper Schmeichel. They are adamant that if Chelsea wants Fofana, the 21-year-old will only be sold if an offer in excess of a world-record fee for a defender is put on the table.

To date, the most expensive defender in football with respect to the transfer fee paid is Harry Maguire. The England international was sold by Leicester to Manchester United for a fee of around £80m.

Fofana is among the best young defenders in England.

So, it is clear that the Foxes wanted an offer in excess of £80m for them to even consider offloading Fofana. Chelsea’s first two offers for the 21-year-old were of £60m and £70m. Both the proposals were rejected.

And as per Santi Aouna’s tweet (h/t Football.London), a third bid of around €95m is acceptable for both the clubs, subject to a lot of paperwork and other related logistics. If true, it makes the Frenchman the new world record holder for the most expensive defender in football history.

After losing Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen, the Blues signed Kalidou Koulibaly to fill the gap. However, with Thiago Silva not getting any younger, manager Thomas Tuchel cannot rely on the Brazilian every week. Hence, they need someone young in that position.

Moreover, as much as Cesar Azpilicueta signing a new deal was good news for the Chelsea fans, he is turning 33 later this month. So, it is clear why the Blues are going all out to complete the signing of Fofana. The young French defender has all the qualities to shine in the Blues of Chelsea.
