Report: Chelsea Cobham graduate eyeing Blues captaincy

Mason Mount is eyeing the Chelsea captaincy in the future

Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount has revealed that he is eyeing the role of club captain in the future. He said this while discussing his ambition via 90min (h/t football.london).

The 23-year-old is currently in the United States with the rest of the team for the pre-season tour. He has featured in both the friendly matches that the Blues have played. The Englishman also captained the team during the second half of the last game.

“Yes, I am still young and I am still learning but whenever the opportunity comes to step up I want to take it. Whether we win, whether we lose I always want to be the one to be able to take it. To take it on the chin if we win and obviously if we lose as well. “

His comments have come amid current club captain Cesar Azpilicueta’s uncertain future at Chelsea. The Spaniard is linked with a move to Barcelona with the club having said to have agreed on personal terms with the player.

A Chelsea youth graduate, the 23-year-old has worn the captain’s armband at times in the past and also led his side for the second half in their previous game against Charlotte. He was also the captain for Chelsea Under-18 FA Youth Cup which the club won in that year.

Jorginho, the vice-captain of the team has entered his final year of contract and captain Azpilicueta’s future being uncertain, Mount has put himself in the fray for the captaincy. It is though very less likely that he will be handed the armband.

Thiago Silva, N’Golo Kante and new addition Kalidou Koulibaly can all be said to be above him in the pecking order for the captaincy. The England international will most likely have to wait a some more years before he can be considered in the fray of leaders to lead Chelsea.

However, a young like him showing such good leadership qualities are likely to be noticed by Thomas Tuchel. A fan favourite, Mount has established himself as a regular player under Tuchel and is likely to make the England squad for the World Cup in November.
