“The only worry”- Ex-PL striker fears new Chelsea owner can fire Tuchel to make his mark

Troy Deeney fears new Chelsea owner can fire Thomas Tuchel to make their mark on Stamford Bridge

Writing in his column for the Sun, as reported by Express, Troy Deeney believes there is managerial change on the cards at Stamford Bridge and fears that a new Chelsea owner may sack Thomas Tuchel and bring in his preferred manager to make a statement.

Chelsea will soon find themselves under new stewardship after Roman Abramovich announced on Wednesday that the club was up for sale. The Russian business tycoon has chosen to bring his unparalleled 19 year run as Chelsea boss to an end, amidst Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and widespread calls for Roman to step down.

Deeney has offered his sympathy for Tuchel who has been answering questions on Abramovich ever since the announcement was made on Wednesday

“I can imagine it is really horrible to be the manager of Chelsea at the moment. I genuinely felt sorry for Thomas Tuchel when I saw him answer question after question on Roman Abramovich and the club’s future.”

Deeney went on to reiterate the fact that the German manager must be allowed to concentrate on football and stop being questioned about Abramovich’s decision.

“Just give him a break. It is also unfair to be asking players about it.”

Surely not?

Whilst extending an arm of support to Tuchel and the players, Deeney also said that he thinks that the new owners may sack Tuchel as they will come in with their own ideas, and will want a new manager to make a statement

“The only worry for the players will be if a new owner brings change and wants to stamp his authority on a few things. Could that mean a manager change? Possibly. Could that mean a couple of new players that affect your position? Possibly.”

Deeney goes on to write that a lot of what happens with Chelsea depends on what kind of an owner they get. According to him, if Chelsea were to get an owner whose ideas are similar to that of the Russian and ones who want an ambitious project, then things may remain as they are right now.

Should Tuchel be relieved of his duties?

While Deeney might presume that the new owners may not want Thomas Tuchel to continue as the manager, it does not need to be the case. The German manager has performed exceedingly well since joining Chelsea midway last season.

He has won the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and the Club World Cup in a short duration. The ex-Borussia Dortmund man is a fan favourite at the club, having stamped his authority on the team. He has given this team a new identity- one which makes them one of the most fearsome teams across Europe.

Chelsea play an attractive brand of football under Tuchel. They are extremely well-coached and have been producing great results on a consistent basis. It would be a highly unpopular call for any new owner to get rid of a manager who has turned this club’s fortunes around.

While a new owner always comes in with new ideas, from Chelsea’s perspective, it would be better if changing the manager is not one of their ideas. Even if there is a bigger name than Tuchel available in the market, it wouldn’t guarantee success. Antonio Conte’s time at Spurs is a prime example. No need to fix what ain’t broke!
