“Best two players on the pitch”- Rival legend urges Chelsea to sign talented PL duo

Arsenal legend Paul Merson urges Chelsea to sign Brighton duo Yves Bissouma and Marc Cucurella

Speaking on Sky Sports (h/t football.london), Arsenal legend Paul Merson claimed that Chelsea would be wise to target Brighton and Hove Albion stars, Marc Cucurella and Yves Bissouma, after their spending showing at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues took on Graham Potter’s Seagulls in a tricky game at Stamford Bridge last week. Romelu Lukaku scored the opener in the 28th minute before Danny Welbeck stole a late equalizer in added time to break Chelsea hearts.

The draw meant we lost even more ground on Manchester City in the title race. And speaking about the game that had just panned out, Merson claimed that Chelsea should be looking to add players such as Cucurella and Bissouma to their team.

He even claimed that they were the two best players on the pitch- a claim hard to argue against. Cucurella played well in a sort of left-sided centre-back role, while the Mali international was a solid presence in the heart of their midfield- which is a commonplace ever since he joined them from Lille.

“If I was Chelsea I would go and get Cucurella, I would definitely go and get him and I would get Bissouma. I know people will say they play for Brighton, they were the best two players on the pitch in my opinion.”

Bissouma and Cucurella to Chelsea?

He does make sense. Brighton, at least on paper, deployed a formation that housed three centre-backs. Cucurella, an able left-back on his day, deputized well in that role against the UEFA Champions League holders in their own den.

He got forward but was also on hand to do his defensive duties. Bissouma, too, would make for a sturdy addition in our midfield, especially with Jorginho and N’Golo Kante not getting any younger.

The Spanish left-back is 23 and the African midfielder is 25- a great age profile to have in the team considering they are nearing the peak of their respective careers. But then again, Chelsea would have to show interest in some way to turn this suggestion into speculation.

After Ben Chilwell’s injury, we do lack a player to properly compete with Marcos Alonso for the second half of the season and the ex-Fiorentina man has himself been a bit underwhelming. Our fitness issues in midfield earlier this season is well documented, and it remains to be seen if we show intent and target players in these two positions in January.
