Transfer News: Chelsea trail Bayern Munich in the race to sign Bundesliga wonderkid Florian Wirtz
According to Valentina Maceri of BILD Sport via Christian Falk (h/t football.london), Chelsea are among five Premier League clubs that are ‘interested’ in signing Florian Wirtz in the near future.
The 18-year-old Bundesliga wonderkid has attracted interest from several European giants. Premier League sides Manchester City, Man United, Arsenal, and Liverpool are also tracking the teenager’s progress.
However, the tweet mentions that Bundesliga giants, Bayern Munich, are leading the race to secure a transfer in 2023. The attacking midfielder has started the season in scintillating form.
With four goals and four assists in his 5 Bundesliga games so far this season, it’s not surprising that some of Europe’s top clubs are interested in him. Wirtz currently plays for Bayer Leverkusen, a team Chelsea would be familiar with.
Wirtz to Chelsea?
After all, it was from Leverkusen where they signed another young German attacking midfielder in Kai Havertz. While the youngster continues to divide opinion at Stamford Bridge, some would say his goal in the UEFA Champions League final has already made him a club icon.
The Blues’ depth in the number 10 area is pretty impressive, to say the least. Apart from Havertz, Mason Mount can play in that area to great effect. The young Englishman still has his best years ahead of him as well.
Moreover, Hakim Ziyech continues to vie for starts in that area while Christian Pulisic has also been used as an attacking midfielder by Thomas Tuchel. With Havertz and Mount still so young, interest in Wirtz may not make complete sense.

But the Blues have had a tendency to bring in quality teenage players and loan them out in the hopes of finding a gem amongst them in the future. Nevertheless, it is still early days in Chelsea’s interest and this is one to keep on the backburner for the Blues faithful.
