Transfer News: Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich requests urgent meeting to sign Lionel Messi
According to transfer news from AS (h/t Metro), Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has requested an urgent meeting in a bid to sign Lionel Messi. The Russian billionaire wants to enter into talks with Messi’s camp over a free transfer and want to gazump the likes of PSG and Manchester City to his signing.
Barcelona sent shockwaves across the football fraternity when they announced that Lionel Messi would be leaving the club. Despite their best efforts, a new contract that was agreed on cannot be signed now due to the financial regulations of La Liga. That put Messi’s future straight up in the air with Europe’s elite side’s scrambling to land arguably the best player in the history of the game.
PSG and Manchester City were obvious favourites given their financial tenacity and both clubs have even been after the player previously. However, a move to City is complicated given they recently signed Jack Grealish for a British record amount from Aston Villa. (h/t Metro)
Amidst all that, it is Chelsea who are looking for a smash and grab. Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has apparently requested an urgent meeting with Messi’s entourage over a possible move. The Blues are hoping to overtake the likes of PSG and City in this mad scramble and get their hands on the iconic Argentine.

It’s not entirely outlandish to think that Chelsea can actually land the six-time Balon d’Or winner. The Blues have not spent a penny this season and have offloaded a number of players. It should give the idea that the finances are there is Chelsea and Abramovich really want to pull off this deal.
However, as things stand, a move looks unlikely with The Telegraph reporting that the 34-year-old is on the cusp of signing a contract with PSG.
