Transfer News: Chelsea release seven players including Marco van Ginkel
According to transfer news from the Daily Mail, Chelsea have released as many as seven players from the club, including forgotten midfielder Marco van Ginkel.
Van Ginkel signed for Chelsea from Dutch outfit Vitesse Arnhem in 2013. However, the Dutchman was plagued with serious injury troubles throughout his stint with the club. He has been able to resurrect his career away on loan with PSV Eindhoven, after poor spells with the likes of AC Milan and Stoke City.
Having spent the 2020/21 term with PSV, it was largely expected that Van Ginkel would be let go of by Chelsea when his deal ran out. And that is what has transpired as the 28-year-old leaves the club with just four appearances under his belt.
Apart from Van Ginkel, the other players that have been cut from the roster by Chelsea are veteran goalkeeper Willy Caballero, who had been a Blue since 2017 having signed from Manchester City. The 39-year-old went on to feature 38 times for Chelsea and was even preferred over Kepa Arrizabalaga as the first-choice for an extended period in 2019/20.
Caballero was named on the substitutes bench for Chelsea’s UEFA Champions League triumph over former club Manchester City last month. He also won the FA Cup and the UEFA Europa League as well.
