Chelsea extend contract of 20-year-old starlet impressing on loan amid PL interest

Chelsea News: Marc Guehi contract extended by 12 months

According to latest news from The Athletic (Subscription Required), Chelsea have triggered a twelve-month contract extension option for promising defender Marc Guehi amid interest from various Premier League clubs.

Guehi, 20, is a product of the Chelsea youth academy. The centre-back made his first-team debut in a Carabao Cup tie last season and made another appearance before signing for Swansea City on loan in January 2020. He instantly became a key member of Steve Cooper’s side that missed out on promotion last time out.

Back at Chelsea at the end of the season, Guehi was immediately sent to the Liberty Stadium for another temporary spell. And the 20-year-old impressed yet again, making 42 appearances across all competitions, helping the Swans to a fourth-place finish and a spot in the promotion playoffs.

Guehi’s contract with Chelsea was supposed to run out in the summer of 2022. However, the club have now decided to trigger an option in his deal that sees it get extended by a further twelve-months till 2023. (h/t The Athletic)

The deal, though, does not necessarily mean that Guehi could be set for a first-team role at Stamford Bridge come next season. Indeed, Chelsea are still considering the possibility of sending him out on loan for a third spell or would even be open to the prospect of cashing in on him, valuing him at around £15m-£20m.

If that is indeed the case, Guehi does not seem to short on suitors as Crystal Palace and Southampton are both keen on the 20-year-old. In addition, West Ham and Newcastle United are also monitoring him while there is interest from Borussia Monchengladbach as well. (h/t The Athletic)

Swansea could also be a destination yet again for Guehi, although that would hinge on them being able to earn promotion to the Premier League.

With Thiago Silva not getting any younger, hopefully Guehi is given a chance in the first-team by Thomas Tuchel come next season.
