Out of favour Chelsea star sent off in Premier League 2 tie against Tottenham Hotspur

Chelsea outcast Danny Drinkwater does himself no favours against Tottenham Hotspur in PL 2

It would be an understatement to say that Chelsea signing Danny Drinkwater has not worked out in the club’s favour.

Alongside N’Golo Kante, Drinkwater played a key role in Leicester City’s surprise run to the Premier League title in 2015/16. While Kante moved to the Bridge in 2016, Drinkwater would follow a year later.

While the Frenchman has proven to be a masterstroke of a signing, Drinkwater has been anything but. He has made four appearances this season, none of them for the first-team. (h/t Transfermarkt)

Drinkwater’s fall from grace since moving to Chelsea has been rapid and hard to watch. Yesterday night against Tottenham Hotspur U23 in Premier League 2, he managed to go down another level.

According to the Daily Mail, Drinkwater recieved his marching orders in the 77th minute for kicking out at teenage midfielder Alfie Devine.

On the night Petr Cech returned in goal for Chelsea and we also overturned a 2-0 deficit, Drinkwater made the headlines for all the wrong reasons. It is fair to say he set a poor example for his young teammates.

While it can be argued that Devine provoked the incident with his two footed tackle at Drinkwater, the Blues midfielder could have dealt with the issue by showing more restraint.

His lashing out provoked a mass brawl between both sides. Devine too received his marching orders alongside the Chelsea midfielder.

Drinkwater has not made a first-team appearance for us since 2018. The club was keen to sell him in the summer but could not find any suitors.

At 30, Drinkwater has time to continue his career elsewhere. It is difficult to see him still have a future at the Bridge. Hopefully, this troubled marriage will come to an end sooner rather than later.
