Report – Chelsea outcast missed out on a loan move to France during the summer window

Ligue 1 side Angers pulled out of a loan deal for Chelsea midfielder Danny Drinkwater

According to French publication L’Equipe (h/t Football.london), Chelsea misfit Danny Drinkwater failed in an attempt to secure a loan move to Ligue 1.

The Englishman joined the club in 2017 from Leicester City. A key player for the Foxes, he has failed to hit the same heights in the blue of Chelsea.

In fact, his impact has been so limited that Drinkwater has made just 23 appearances for the Blues.

During his three years at the club, Drinkwater has spent two spells out on loan. Both stints did little to enhance his reputation as an elite level player.

He had the opportunity to move to the continent on loan this summer. French side Angers were keen on securing the 20-year-old’s services.

However, they pulled the plug due to the player’s lack of proficiency in the French language and the French way of football.

Drinkwater had earlier commented on getting his career back on track. He was also keen on a move abroad but that now looks to be fading.

Drinkwater cost Chelsea a significant £35million. It is fair to say it has been money squandered.

The player has also been left out of Chelsea’s squad for the Champions League group stage. It gives an indication of his future at the club.

Drinkwater has not been allotted a squad number in the Chelsea squad for the 2020/21 season. His previous number has been given to new signing Thiago Silva.

The midfielder appears to have played his last game for Chelsea. What the future holds for him remains to be seen.
