According to The Metro, Chelsea have been handed an injury worry after Ben Chilwell limped off while on England duty.
The 23-year-old started the game as England’s left-back but lasted just 38 before he was replaced by Bukayo Saka.
He was seen holding his back as he left the field. It would have been a worrying sight for Frank Lampard, who has seen the player fit into his team like a glove.
One of the club’s major summer acquisitions, Chilwell has had to wait a while before making his Chelsea bow.
Having arrived injured, the defender was unable to take the field from the beginning of the season. He has in recent weeks cemented his spot in the team and is now a key player for us.
England boss Gareth Southgate confirmed that the player injured his back. He refused to elaborate further on the matter.
“He had some sort of issue with his back that he was complaining about and he didn’t feel he could carry on.”
Chelsea will now wait to see the extent of the injury. The Blues face Newcastle United next in the Premier League this weekend.
Whether Chilwell will be a part of the matchday squad remains to be seen.
If Chilwell is ruled out, the Blues will have to make do with Emerson Palmieri and Marcos Alonso.
Alonso has not played for Chelsea since his falling out with Lampard at the Hawthorns. Time will tell if the Chelsea boss will bring the Spaniard back into the reckoning.
