Trevor Chalobah could have been playing in the Championship but ended up in France
Huddersfield chairman Phil Hodgkinson has confirmed that Chelsea turned down their offer to take Trevoh Chalobah on loan.
The midfielder spent last season on loan at the Terriers and made 38 appearances for the Championship side.
He also scored one goal for them but joined Lorient this season on loan in Ligue 1. Chalobah came through the ranks at Chelsea and spend the 2018-19 season on loan at Ipswich Town.
Huddersfield wanted him for another season but the Blues wanted him to gain experience outside of England. Hodgkinson told Examiner Live (h/t Football.london):
“We did enquire about some without a shadow of a doubt. We enquired with Chelsea about Trevoh Chalobah but they wanted him to have another challenge abroad. We did go in for a number of other players but some of them simply weren’t available for loan..”
Making the best of the move
Chalobah is yet to feature for the senior Chelsea side, and it will be interesting to see how things develop for him in France.
The 21-year-old can play in the midfield or defence and already has two appearances for Lorient this season.
His brother, Nathaniel, was also a part of the Chelsea team but now is a part of Watford. Trevoh, for his part, has made several appearances for the England youth teams and last featured for the U21 side in 2019.
Chelsea have a plethora of options in their midfield and it is best for Trevoh’s growth that he went to another club on loan.

This experience could help him develop further and break into the Chelsea team. However, that seems tough with all the signings we made over the summer.
