Chelsea close to securing a £40m move for Lewis Dunk
According to The Sun, Chelsea are closing in on Brighton & Hove Albion skipper Lewis Dunk.
Frank Lampard is keen to strengthen the Chelsea backline that has been as porous as a sieve this season. Although the Blues are keen on West Ham United ace Declan Rice, his massive £80m asking price is proving to be a hindrance.
As per the report, Dunk has now emerged as the club’s leading candidate to transform the backline.
The 28-year-old came through the ranks at the Brighton academy. With over 300 first-team games for the Seagulls, he is well educated in the English game.
Dunk has made it no secret of his love for Chelsea. A Blue faithful, he looks up to former skipper and club legend John Terry for inspiration. (h/t Daily Star)
The Seagulls skipper has been missing from the club’s promotional material ahead of the 2020-21 campaign. This has led to fears among their fans that Dunk could be on his way out.
Chelsea are not the only club monitoring Dunk’s progress. Arch-rivals Tottenham hotspur are also in the fray for the Englishman. (h/t The Sun)
A leader at the back, he is also a dominant presence in the air at both ends of the pitch. Dunk may not be the most glamorous option. He could, however, turn out to be an extremely effective one.
Strengthening at the back is a necessity for Chelsea this window. The club has lofty ambitions of returning to the top. It will be difficult to attain it if we keep leaking goals like we did all season.
Signing Dunk will be a step in the right direction as we seek to address a major deficiency.
