[Not Henderson] Chelsea keeping tabs on English goalkeeping star who could be sold by PL club

Chelsea monitoring the situation of Jordan Pickford

According to a report from the Daily Star, Chelsea are keeping tabs on the situation of Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, who could be axed by the Toffees this summer.

Pickford joined Everton from Sunderland in a £30m deal in 2017. At the time, he became the most expensive British goalkeeper. The 26-year-old enjoyed a swift rise to stardom and soon became the first-choice goalkeeper for the England national team.

Pickford was an integral member of the Three Lions’ side that made it as far as the semi-finals of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. However, his form has been on a decline ever since, with the 2019/20 campaign, perhaps, being his worst.

The 26-year-old made several high-profile errors that cost Everton matches. And as a result, the Toffees’ boss Carlo Ancelotti is looking to axe Pickford this summer. And, Chelsea are monitoring the Englishman’s situation keenly. (h/t Daily Star)

Chelsea’s goalkeeping situation currently is a bit problematic. Kepa Arrizabalaga has struggled to justify the world-record fee for a goalkeeper since arriving in 2018. The Spaniard was quite error-prone in the season gone by, which saw Frank Lampard axe him from the starting XI.

The manager is not convinced by Kepa and with Willy Caballero nearing his forties, a new goalkeeper is a must this summer.

Pickford has been linked with a switch to Stamford Bridge in the past. However, considering his performances this past season, we may not exactly be upgrading our options by moving from Kepa to Pickford.

As iterated earlier, bringing in a new goalkeeper should be a top priority for Lampard & co. However, Pickford would hardly represent the ideal solution for us. There surely are better options in the market for the club to look at.
