Reputed pundit identifies two key areas for Chelsea to strengthen in the summer

Jamie Redknapp tells Chelsea to focus on defensive reinforcement

According to Sky Sports (h/t Football.London), Jamie Redknapp has told Chelsea to focus on defensive reinforcements during the summer transfer window.

The Blues have enjoyed a promising season and have moved quickly ahead of the summer window. The club have already signed Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner.

This, however, does little to solve what has been a pressing issue all season – our defence. In fact, no other club in the top 10 of the Premier League has conceded more than Frank Lampard’s wards.

It is something that needs to be addressed if we are to challenge the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City next season.

“They need to get better defenders in, get a keeper in next season.”

One of the players on the chopping block is Kepa Arrizabalaga. The 25-year-old was dropped following the horror show at Anfield.

The Blues looked comfortable in his absence and even notched up a clean sheet. Having also been dropped for the FA Cup semifinals, Kepa’s days at the club could be numbered.

The same can be said of the back four, of which only Cesar Azpilicueta has seen his reputation stay intact. While the likes of Marcos Alonso and Emerson Palmieri are our of favour, the likes of Kurt Zouma, Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen have all failed to impress.

It remains to be seen how the club plans to go about reinforcing the defence.

The win over Wolverhampton Wanders ensured we finished in the top four and qualified for next season’s UEFA Champions League. It represents a remarkable achievement for Lampard in his first season in charge of the club.

With better players at his disposal, expectations will be higher next season.
