Chelsea turn to the La Liga in search of Chilwell alternative – ready to bid £27m

Chelsea eye Getafe left-back Marc Cucurella

According to the Daily Mail, Chelsea are readying a £27m bid for Getafe left-back Marc Cucurella.

The Blues have been monitoring the 22-year-old since March and have identified him as the preferred alternative to first-choice target Ben Chilwell.

Having come up through the youth system at Espanyol, Cucurella joined arch-rivals Barcelona in 2012. He made just one appearance for the Catalans before joining Eibar in 2019.

Barcelona exercised their buyback option to bring him back to the Nou Camp just sixteen days later. He then joined Getafe initially on loan before the club brought him on a permanent basis in March.

If Chelsea do miss out on Chilwell, he could once again be on the move. Cucurella made 45 appearances at Getafe this term and has shown himself to be a promising performer.

Selling the player to Chelsea will more than double the investment made by Getafe. Barcelona too stands to gain by a move, with them set to pocket 10% of any transfer fee.

The left-back is a key position Frank Lampard is keen on investing in. Both Marcos Alonso and Emerson Palmieri are out of favour and could be on their way to Spain and Italy respectively.

With Chilwell high on the club’s wishlist, Leicester City are keen to hold onto their prized asset. It remains to be seen if them losing out on a Champions League spot will turn the player’s head.

The Foxes looked set to qualify for Europe’s premier competition only for a post-restart meltdown to see them miss out in the final few days.

Cucurella is a surprise choice but is a solid player who has room to grow. Still just 22, he has his whole career ahead of him. If all goes well, it could just be at Chelsea.

It promises to be a busy summer at Stamford Bridge.
