Chelsea starlet Billy Gilmour has revealed that he snubbed a loan move to an unnamed club in January following a chat with manager Frank Lampard and his assistant Jody Morris.
The youngster was at the time with the club’s Under 23 side. Lampard was not keen on sanctioning a deal, not even temporarily.
The Chelsea boss instead promoted him to the first-team, where he has since thrived. It was revealed by the player on the club’s official site. (h/t Football.london)
“Around Christmas time, I was thinking that I might go out on loan for the rest of the season but got told to stay again and got moved into the first team building,”
He went on to reveal that Lampard thought it is best that he stayed at the club and moved up the ranks, something he has precisely done, in double-quick time.
Gilmour saw it as an opportunity to make his mark in training and impress the coaches. He saw himself get added to the club’s first team on a regular basis in February.
The youngster played in Chelsea’s 2-0 win over European champions Liverpool in the FA Cup in March. He earned rave reviews for his performance as he bossed the midfield against his more illustrious opponents.
With every passing game, it becomes apparently clear that Lampard was right in advising Gilmour to stay put. A fact not lost on the player.
“It’s worked out really well for me and all I can do is thank the manager for trusting in me.”
In a season where Chelsea is experiencing a youth revolution, Lampard’s judgment has ensured that one more has been added to our list of promising talents.
Gilmour was a part of the Chelsea youth side that won the FA Youth Cup and the Under-18 PL in 2017-18.
The midfielder has also represented Scotland at various youth levels including the Under-21s in spite of being just 18 years old.
