Chelsea look to beat Liverpool to the signing prolific 27-goal star with £52m clause

Chelsea looking to hijack Liverpool transfer for Timo Werner

According to German publication Kicker (h/t Daily Star), Chelsea are looking to trump Liverpool to the signing of German marksman Timo Werner.

The Leipzig ace has enjoyed a prolific season. His performances have caught the eye of several teams and Chelsea hope to steal a march on their competitors by meeting directly with the player’s representatives.

Werner has netted an impressive 27 goals and 12 assists in 37 appearances this season. His numbers are only slightly worse off than our top three scorers combined this season. (h/t BBC)

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard is a fan of the player. He will be keen to replace the downturn in goals and assists that came around due to the sale of Eden Hazard last summer.

The Blues were keen on both Edinson Cavani and Dries Mertens in the summer. Both deals failed to materialize, leaving us blunt up front.

Michy Batshuayi has been a disappointment while Oliver Giroud has been on the periphery for most of the season.

We have been far too reliant on Tammy Abraham to score goals upfront. The youngster has done well but has struggled to maintain his early scoring run.

Werner has a £52million buyout clause in his contract. Given his skill and his age profile, it should be a worthwhile long-term investment for the club.

The addition of a proven goalscorer will also lessen the pressure on our defence that has struggled to keep clean sheets this season.

The main threat to his signature will come from Liverpool, who have made him their top transfer priority. (h/t Express)

Werner is a self-professed fan of Merseysiders and Jurgen Klopp, and has been publicly vocal about the same. (h/t Express)
