Chelsea keen on signing Ligue 1 star who will be out of contract this summer

Frank Lampard hints at move for PSG’s Edinson Cavani

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has hinted at interest in Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani. (h/t BBC)

Cavani is out of contract in the summer and has already informed the French superclub that he is keen on leaving in the January transfer window. (h/t Express)

Lampard was full of praise for the Uruguayan star and praised his mentality and panache for scoring goals. He was, however, coy when talking about making a move for the striker.

“I’m not absolutely aware of what the situation is, so we’ll see.”

Edinson Cavani

Cavani has been a revelation since his move to PSG in 2013. The striker has played 298 times for the Parisians and has scored 198 games. (h/t Whoscored)

A mentor to Abraham?

Chelsea have been extremely dependent on Tammy Abraham for goals this season. The youngster has scored 15 goals this season, more than double of Christian Pulisic in second with 6 goals.

With Michy Batshuayi and Oliver Giroud out of favour and the latter seemingly on his way out, Chelsea lacks a senior striker who can guide and share the workload with Abraham.

At 32, Cavani is entering the final years of his career and the last hurrah at Chelsea should be appealing. He can leave his legacy in more ways than one by mentoring Abraham into the potential world-class striker he can become.

Cavani has won 21 trophies at both club and international levels in his illustrious career. Being mentored by a player of such stature can instil a winning mentality into the Chelsea youth.

Atletico Madrid are in the pole position to sign the striker. Chelsea would do well to beat the Spaniards to the Uruguayan as they strive to add some much-needed experience to a youthful side.

Cavani is Uruguay’s second-highest goalscorer with 50 goals in 116 appearances (h/t Express).
