The Blues will be hard-pressed to secure the striker in the January transfer window. Werner has ruled out any chances of him moving this month but could be open to one in the future.

Leipzig are unlikely to want to sell the player who has accounted for 39% of their goals in the Bundesliga as they maintain a 4 point lead over Bayern Munich.

European Champions Liverpool are also in the fray for the striker. Manager Jurgen Klopp has been a long term admirer of the German forward and looks set to rival the Blues for his signature. Werner is expected to cost about £60 million.

The goalscoring messiah?

Chelsea have largely depended on Tammy Abraham to play as the first-choice striker this season. The 22-year-old has repaid Lampard’s trust in him by scoring 15 goals and 4 assists in 29 appearances this season. (h/t Whoscored)

However, with Oliver Giroud out of favor and Michy Batshuayi out of sorts, the Blues have been too dependent on Abraham to get goals.

Abraham’s goal tally of 15 accounts for a quarter of Chelsea’s goals this season with Christian Pulisic a distant second at 6. The over-reliance on the striker was on display at Newcastle where the Blues dominated for long parts of the game without being able to score.

Playing the youngster every game could risk him burning out. Given the effect it has had on Rashford, Chelsea will do well to rest the youngster when needed.

Werner would have given Lampard a reliable option to choose from helping him lessen the loan on Abraham. It is possible that Chelsea could have even landed Werner this month had Erling Haaland moved to Leipzig rather than Borussia Dortmund.

With Leipzig looking to win their first Bundesliga title, it is unlikely that they will part with Werner in the January transfer window. Whether Chelsea will look to sign the striker in the summer remains to be seen.

Werner has represented the German national team 29 times and has scored 11 goals.
