Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri has indicated that Olivier Giroud will not leave Stamford Bridge at the end of the season, reports The Metro.
Olivier Giroud, 31, who is the Europa League top scorer with 11 goals in ten games, earlier this week had said that he was planning to leave Chelsea in the summer to seek out regular playing time elsewhere.
The Frenchman has never been a regular even since he joined the Blues from Arsenal in January 2018. He has started just seven Premier League games this season and has fallen behind Gonzalo Higuain in the pecking order, having previously been an understudy to Alvaro Morata.
Amidst Giroud’s frustration of a lack of regular playing opportunities, Sarri has confirmed our club will trigger a one-year extension in the striker’s contract.
“He [Giroud] is sure [to stay] because the club has an option for another year, another season,” Sarri was quoted by The Metro.
“I spoke to the club two days ago and we agreed to exercise the option. So, he will remain.”
It’s the right decision to trigger a one-year extension in Giroud’s contract. The France international has been frustrated since the start of the season due to a lack of opportunities under Sarri. And then our gaffer brought in Higuain during the January transfer window which further left Giroud exasperated.
But with Higuain failing to deliver the goods for our club, Sarri needs to start Giroud in the remaining Premier League games.
