Chelsea take on Manchester City on Sunday, August 18th, in the first Premier League outing of the season for both clubs at Stamford Bridge. With nine titles shared between them in the last 11 seasons, the two teams have been the cream of the crop in English football.
At the moment, however, there is a stark difference in quality between Enzo Maresca’s men and Pep Guardiola’s charges. While City are gunning for a fifth consecutive Premier League crown, Chelsea’s ambitions this season are likely to be of a top-four finish.
Nonetheless, it is always an exciting affair when both sides meet. Last time at the Bridge, they played out a thrilling 4-4 draw whereas most recently, City won 4-2 in a six-goal thriller in their pre-season friendly in the United States.
Exactly 50 matches have been played between the two clubs in the Premier League. Chelsea hold the upper hand with 27 wins, whereas City are at 16 victories. 7 clashes have ended with a share of the spoilt. Meanwhile, the Blues have outscored City very comfortably with a 71-52 score.
In the Champions League, the two sides have faced only once. Chelsea beat City 1-0 in the all-important final to clinch their second European Cup in Porto back in 2021.
While City are the team with worse numbers in the overall picture, they are big favourites to win on Sunday. As per William Hill (h/t The Sun), the Sky Blues are 5/6 to win with the hosts second favourites by a big margin – 29/10.
Chelsea’s biggest win over Manchester City was a 6-0 success at Stamford Bridge in the 2007/08 season of the Premier League. The match occurred just weeks after Avram Grant replaced Jose Mourinho as the head coach.
Ashley Cole, Michael Essien, Salomon Kalou and Andriy Shevchenko scored once apiece while Didier Drogba bagged a brace.
Interestingly, Manchester City’s heaviest win over Chelsea was also a 6-0 result although that came a lot more recently – February 2019 to be precise. Pep Guardiola’s men obliterated Maurizio Sarri’s hapless side on their way to a second straight Premier League title.
Ilkay Gundogan scored once, Raheem Sterling twice and Sergio Aguero scored a hat-trick.
That accolade belongs to Sergio Aguero. He has scored 10 times against the Blues on 16 different occasions, including two hat-tricks. The former Manchester City marksman has provided 3 assists as well and averaged a goal contribution against Chelsea once in less than 100 minutes.
The disciplinary records of players are yet to be determined with absolute accuracy, but both sides sit equally in that regard.
