Chelsea have long been linked with a move for Federico Chiesa, whose Juventus contract expires next year. With both parties prepared to part ways, Thiago Motta has excluded the player from his plans while the Bianconeri are looking to get rid of him soon to mitigate the risk of losing him for free in 2025.
According to Italian source Corriere dello Sport (h/t Mirror), Juve have massively shunned their asking price for Chiesa. The forward’s valuation has dropped below £20 million, although a transfer for less than just £15 million could be agreed as well.
Apart from Chelsea, Tottenham have also been linked with a swoop for Chiesa. The 26-year-old’s agent, Fali Ramadani was in London some days ago and held discussions with both interested parties. AS Roma and Napoli are also said to be keen on Chiesa’s signing, but the fact that his agent was in England perhaps indicates that he wants to leave Serie A altogether.
The forward’s biggest career achievement was being Italy’s best player at Euro 2020 as they beat England to win the competition. However, his career at Juventus and particularly under Massimiliano Allegri has taken a slightly downward turn. In what was possibly his last season in Turin, Chiesa scored 10 goals and provided three assists in all competitions. The Italian even played with Cristiano Ronaldo back when the latter for with the Old Lady, even frustrating the Portuguese legend once.
Chelsea would be the perfect destination for Chiesa to regain his feet, and the Blues might also be enticed by the prospect of his availability for extremely cheap.
Though they have not been actively looking to sign a winger, the Euro 2020 victor’s signing could see them add some more squad depth and competition on the right wing for Noni Madueke and Raheem Sterling, who also played in the position several times last season. In recent seasons, Chiesa has arguably performed better than both forwards and could play a primary role in west London.
At 26, Chiesa is not at the age of players Chelsea have acquired of late, but he still has the best years of his career to come and can be a good medium-term option in their sporting project.
Chelsea’s board is currently working on finalising Conor Gallagher’s sale to Atletico Madrid and Samu Omorodion’s signing from them. Once that’s done, they could continue talks with Chiesa’s agent to possibly sign him ahead of Tottenham.
