Revealed: All the cards Chelsea hold in the Marc Guéhi situation

As revealed by Football London, Chelsea have the right to match whatever offer Crystal Palace formally receive for their star English defender Marc Guéhi.

The Blues also stand to get 20% of the amount Palace receive from Guéhi’s sale should they decide not to bring him back.

The Eagles are demanding in the region of £65 million to let the 24-year-old leave Selhurst Park this summer.

It is safe to say that Palace were right to spend £18 million on Guéhi when they bought him from Chelsea three summers ago.

During his time with the South London club, Guéhi has made 111 club appearances, scoring five goals and assisting twice. His current £50k-per-week contract at Palace runs until June 2026, with Newcastle United being the club most heavily linked with him in recent days.

Guéhi has also established himself firmly in the England national team, having shone for the Three Lions at the recently concluded Euro 2024 as they made it to the final again only to lose to Spain.

A win-win for the Blues

Chelsea don’t really need Marc Guéhi regardless of how promising he is and how important a player of his quality and local background would be at Stamford Bridge.

That said, Chelsea are in a win-win situation here, standing to gain money if he leaves elsewhere while holding the right of first refusal for whatever formal offer Palace are willing to accept.

The prudent thing for Chelsea to do here, however, would be to take the 20% from his sale elsewhere and keep tending their own garden.
