Robert Sánchez congratulates Spain teammates upon UEFA Euro 2024 win

Spain and Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sánchez was ecstatic and promptly congratulated his compatriots as they lifted the UEFA Euro 2024 trophy on Sunday after beating England in the final.

Sánchez, who has two senior caps for Spain, would have been part of the Euro-winning Spain team in another life had it not been for his underwhelming performances in his debut season at Chelsea that saw him fall down the pecking order in the national setup.

That, though, did not stop him from congratulating La Roja.

Sánchez broke into the Spain national setup after impressing during his time at Brighton & Hove Albion. He fell out of favour with Roberto De Zerbi, however, and soon found himself down the pecking order for the Seagulls, though he had made enough of a name for himself to earn a move to Stamford Bridge last summer.

While things began strongly for him at Chelsea, underwhelming performances once again saw him fall down the order as Đorđe Petrović started gaining the now-gone Mauricio Pochettino’s favour.

With a new coach Enzo Maresca at the helm, Sánchez will hope to regain his form and reputation. His £60k-a-week contract at Chelsea is currently set to run until June 2030.

Crucial season ahead for Sánchez

It’s a big season ahead for Sánchez. Reliable reports suggest he is Maresca’s first-choice goalkeeper going forward, but so was he for Pochettino as well, so he’ll know that things can change very quickly.

In truth, Sánchez’s performances had started dipping during the back end of his Brighton stint as well, so one can imagine how lucky the Seagulls would consider themselves that they managed to sell him on when they did.

But there’s no doubt about Sánchez’s quality; it’s only his confidence that needs bolstering once again, and one hopes that happens under Maresca in the coming season.
