Video: Marc Guiu teaches Chelsea fans his name pronunciation after Barcelona transfer

New signing Marc Guiu tells Chelsea fans how to pronounce his name

Via a short video posted on Chelsea’s official Instagram account, new signing Marc Guiu shares with the Blues fanbase the actual pronunciation of his name.

The 2006-born Spain U19 international has recently arrived from Barcelona after the Premier League club activated his release clause.

Guiu was added to the senior Barça setup only last season.

All in all, Guiu made 27 appearances for both Barça’s main and B teams in the 2023/24 season across all competitions, delivering in the process 9 goals and 4 assists. (Source: Transfermarkt)

Chelsea go into the 2024/25 season under new manager Enzo Maresca, whom they brought in from Leicester City after the Foxes’ promotion-winning campaign in the Championship in the season gone by.

The Blues kick off their Premier League campaign next month at home against defending champions, Man City.

Sadly, few will care

Pronouncing names of people and places of a different origin is hard for any foreign community, but it’s particularly hard in the UK.

This talkSPORT clip sadly illustrates the point of perfection. It’s not necessarily a UK problem, but it’s most prevalent there. Wanting to learn a different way of saying, or even doing anything, requires a sense of humility often not found in the common folk anywhere.

After all, we live in the same anglophone world where Mourinho remains “hoe-zay” and Man United’s Bruno remains “Fernan-days” despite these two having corrected people around them for years.

One can only hope that Guiu at least finds people working in the media more inclined to listen to his pronunciation.
