Football pundit Jeff Stelling has claimed that Cole Palmer was England’s best player at the 2024 Euros despite not starting a game throughout the entire tournament. Spain’s Rodri won the Player of the Tournament Award after a stellar Euro campaign.
The young English winger has established himself as one of the best wingers in Europe despite his limited performances in Euro 2024. Cole Palmer was the key substitute for Three Lions manager Gareth Southgate for the entire campaign. The gaffer received several criticisms for not using Palmer in the first eleven, and the England national team also struggled during their initial matches in the campaign. But Southgate saved the Chelsea star as a key weapon for every match, and Palmer never failed to impress the gaffer with his performances.
The 22-year-old never started a game for England at the Euro, and his five appearances were from the bench. He has always created momentum on the pitch within minutes of entering the game. Palmer’s ability to move quickly with the ball and provide key passes to the box has helped the Three Lions in crucial matches. He also helped England by equalising the score in the final against Spain. Despite losing to La Roja in the final, Palmer’s performance was exceptional in the tournament.
Football presenter Stelling has always been an admirer of the youngster, and he claimed after the final that ‘Palmer should be named as the Player of the Tournament’.(h/t Football London)
“For me a player who would be our player of the tournament, he barely played, and that would be Cole Palmer.”
The 22-year-old winger is the most valuable player in the Chelsea squad right now. He arrived at Stamford Bridge on the last day of the summer transfer window in 2023 from Manchester City. Despite, being talented, the English international was struggling for playing time under Pep Guardiola. Chelsea’s then-manager Mauricio Pochettino had faith in the youngster and provided him more time on the pitch.
Palmer has impressed the whole Premier League fans with his debut season for the West London club. He scored 25 goals and provided 15 assists in 45 games across all competitions for the Blues and became the top-scorer for the club last season. The youngster has flourished under Pochettino and the performance also opened his way to the national team for the Euros.
Chelsea are currently preparing under new coach Enzo Maresca for the upcoming campaign and the manager might use Palmer as the main weapon in the front line to attack and score goals. Primarily Palmer is a right-winger but he was used to playing as an attacking midfielder under Pochettino and he had dazzling performances in his new position. After signing Dewsbury-Hall from Leicester, Maresca could give Palmer his right winger position back for the new season as the manager could use the new addition in the central midfield.
