Premier League centurion warns Chelsea signing of new Stamford Bridge reality

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall won’t be a starter at Chelsea, claims Peter Crouch

Former English striker Peter Crouch has recently come out with a bold claim about Chelsea’s new midfield signing, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.

The 25-year-old has been reunited with Enzo Maresca, who was his boss at Leicester City last season, on the back of a £30m move as Chelsea hope to leverage their existing relationship in order to propel back to the top of the Premier League table.

However, according to Crouch, who scored 108 Premier League goals, Dewsbury-Hall should not be expecting too many playing minutes coming his way next season.

“Towards the end of last season, Enzo Fernández got much better, and I think we’ll see more of Enzo and [Moisés] Caicedo next year. Now they’ve got a season under their belt, I think they’ll improve.

“At the moment, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall will be squad player but when someone like Chelsea come in for you, you must give it a go. You can always go back to a team [like Leicester] but you’ve got to try your luck at these clubs. I did it when I went to Liverpool, and it was the best thing I ever did.”

Crouch speaking to Paddy Power, as quoted by Football London.

Having signed a five-year contract, Dewsbury-Hall joins the likes of Omari Kellyman, Tosin Adarabioyo, Marc Guiu, and Renato Veiga as new arrivals at Chelsea this summer.

The Blues face a tough game to kick off their 2024/25 campaign as they host reigning Premier League champions Man City On August 18.

Here’s a cautionary tale

While it is true that Dewsbury-Hall would have been less likely to get minutes for Chelsea in Premier League as easily as he did for Leicester in the Championship, things have changed drastically over the past week.

We’re still in the middle of the aftermath of Enzo Fernández’ racism chanting incident. As Chelsea have opened up their own investigation, there is a slight possibility they may not want him representing them going forward at all, which would have been an easy decision to make had he not been one of the most expensive players in the history of the sport but it remains a possibility nonetheless, especially since Saudi Arabia is also a big player in football now.

This means Dewsbury-Hall is likely to at least get some opportunities to stamp his authority, especially under the manager for whom he helped deliver a league title last season.

In terms of past examples, we have the likes of N’Golo Kanté, who took to life at Chelsea like a duck to water as he further went about establishing himself as one of the league’s finest-ever midfielders, but we also have Danny Drinkwater, to dissolved into oblivion like a water droplet in an ocean.

What the recent past and Chelsea’s recent trigger-happy behaviour tells Dewsbury-Hall is this: he will have his chances to make a name for himself, since very few players can consider themselves undroppable at Chelsea these days anyway.
