Chelsea to re-sign Dominic Solanke from Bournemouth
Former Everton chief Keith Wyness has warned Chelsea about their interest in Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke. Chelsea have included the English striker on their target list but have yet to make any moves for the player.
The Chelsea academy graduate left the West London club in 2017 to join Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp. The German manager had immense trust in him and provided chances for the striker to shine at Anfield. However, the English international failed to impress Klopp, managing to score only one goal in his two-year stint with the Merseyside club.
Solanke later joined Bournemouth and gradually became a mainstay with his performances. He proved his ability to score goals for the club in the 2022/23 season, netting 29 goals and providing seven assists in 46 Championship games, playing a vital part in their promotion to the Premier League.
Solanke also established himself as one of the top strikers in the Premier League with his performance in the last campaign. He scored 19 goals and provided three assists in 38 league games, becoming the fifth-top scorer in the league. His performance attracted interest from multiple clubs this summer, and Chelsea have considered him for the striker role.
However, former Everton chief Wyness claims that Solanke is not different from the current Chelsea options and warns the club against pursuing him. Wyness told Football Insider’s Insider Track podcast that Chelsea have yet to make any move for the England international.
I don’t see it happening at all. Certainly not for those kinds of numbers. While he’s shown some form for Bournemouth, I think that’s where he should stay. I don’t think he’s a Chelsea player. He’s not the solution they’re looking for. He’s a bit too similar to what they already have going forward, so I don’t think that one is a goer.”
Chelsea in search for a new goal poacher
Despite scoring a bunch of goals last season, the West London club struggled in the front line without a ‘perfect’ goal-getter. Then-manager Mauricio Pochettino tried Armando Broja and Nicolas Jackson in the number nine position. Broja was a complete disappointment in that role, leading Chelsea to loan out the Albanian in the second part of the season. Jackson managed to score 17 goals for the Blues across all competitions and was the only natural striker in the squad for the Argentine manager.
Chelsea’s new manager, Enzo Maresca, is currently trying to sign a goal poacher who could score more than 20 goals for the club in the upcoming campaign. Chelsea have considered Solanke for the role, but Chelsea ace Cole Palmer scored more than him last season, and the Italian manager may not be interested in signing the Bournemouth striker.
Maresca is also impressed with Christopher Nkunku’s training performance and might use him as a striker in his new era, with Jackson assigned to the false nine position. However, Maresca could sign a young striker as a backup option for the front line, making the player a future asset for the West London club.
