Chelsea told to sign former Arsenal star who has been phenomenal in the Euros

Frank Leboeuf tells Chelsea to sign Granit Xhaka

Speaking to BoyleSports, former Chelsea player Frank Leboeuf has asked his former club to sign Bayer Leverkusen and Switzerland midfielder Granit Xhaka.

As quoted by Football London, Leboeuf had this to say on the matter:

“I’m telling you the one who Chelsea should sign is Granit Xhaka. He’s so impressive and I think Chelsea should have signed him when he left Arsenal.

“He has been phenomenal for Switzerland at the EUROs and he was also the Player of the Season for Leverkusen – he suits Chelsea so well, particularly in midfield with Enzo and Caicedo.

“He could be the missing piece of the puzzle for them.”

Xhaka, of course, is no stranger to English football, having spent seven years at rival club Arsenal, for most of which he was much ridiculed, often by his own club’s fanbase.

His time at Leverkusen has been the complete opposite, however. After an inspiring farewell season at the Emirates, Xhaka returned to Germany and became Xabi Alonso’s midfield general in the Leverkusen first team that went on to end Bayern Munich’s monopoly in the Bundesliga and completed a domestic double.

Xhaka’s performances with Switzerland at UEFA Euro 2024 have further helped resuscitate his reputation.

Xhaka, who turns 32 this September, has a contract in place at Leverkusen until June 2028, which brings him approximately €4.15 million in salary per year.

An interesting take, but an unlikely move

While a legitimate argument can be had regarding how an experienced player in the middle could not only compose Chelsea’s midfield but the entire team on the pitch, it’s hard to imagine why Xhaka would leave Leverkusen, and that too for Chelsea.

For starters, he’s finally in the best, most happy phase of his career after years of ridicule from fans and pundits alike, and he’s at a stable club who, by virtue of their operations, have managed to dethrone Bayern in Germany. Why, then, would he want to leave those calm shores for the turbulent Blue waters?

Unless Chelsea offer up silly money, which let’s be honest cannot be ruled out, expect Xhaka to go nowhere this summer.
