Chelsea signed Raheem Sterling from Manchester City two years ago by paying €56.2 million for his switch but the forward has failed to live up to the billing in west London in comparison to his fantastic form at the Etihad Stadium.
Football Transfers has reported that the Blues are now prepared to sell the English international this summer as they look to raise funds and clear deadweight off their wage bill to continue their squad rebuild.
Sterling’s Chelsea future has come into question as he is set to face stern competition for a place next season from the likes of Cole Palmer, Mykhailo Mudryk and Nicolas Jackson, while Enzo Maresca will also hope that Christopher Nkunku is fit and firing.
Transfermarkt has valued Sterling at €35 million, though with three years left on his contract at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea may seek a better amount for his sale to recover as much of their investment as possible from two years back.
Not too long ago, there was interest in Sterling’s services from Saudi Arabia though it is understood that the player is not open to the prospect of heading to the Middle East and wants to prove his credentials at Chelsea next season.
While Chelsea are open to parting company with him, he remains a valuable asset who can play across all possible positions in the offensive third. Moreover, Sterling is still only 29 and has the prime years of his career ahead of him.
And though he has been labelled as a flop since coming in from Man City, the forward produced respectable numbers last season as he struck 10 goals and provided eight assists in all competitions for the Blues.
Moreover, the club could be playing as many as 70 matches in all competitions next season and squad depth will be of the essence. As a result, Sterling’s availability in the squad throughout the campaign could prove decisive.
There is every reason to believe that Sterling will be a better version of himself under Maresca, who is one of Pep Guardiola’s former assistant coaches and deploys a brand of football that is very similar to that of the Spaniard. Thus, Chelsea should not aggressively consider pushing him unless they receive a good enough offer.
