A View From The Bridge

Chelsea make opening bid for 22-year-old goalkeeper playing in La Liga

Chelsea make opening bid to sign Villarreal shot-stopper Filip Jorgensen

According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea have made an opening bid worth €20million for the signing of Villarreal goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen.

The Blues have been busy making moves in the transfer market as they look to wholeheartedly back new head coach Enzo Maresca to turn the club’s fortunes around after a disastrous 2023/24 campaign.

After the arrivals of fresh faces such as Tosin Adarabioyo and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall among others, it has been reported in recent days that Enzo Maresca wants to bring in a new goalkeeper before the transfer window slams shut. And the Blues have already made their first move for a goalkeeper.

Taking to his official X account, Fabrizio Romano claims that Chelsea have lodged their first bid for Villarreal shot-stopper Filip Jorgensen after positive talks with the player’s camp. The young glovesman is keen on a move to Stamford Bridge.

“EXCLUSIVE: Chelsea send first bid in the region of €20m to Villarreal for Filip Jorgensen!” Romano tweeted.

“It follows talks on player side as revealed earlier this week; he’s on the list as potential new GK for Maresca. Jorgensen, keen on the move.”

A product of Villarreal’s youth system, Jorgensen made his first-team debut in December 2021. However, it took him until January 30, 2023 to make his La Liga debut for Villarreal, taking his guard in goal in the 1-0 loss to Rayo Vallecano.

The Sweden-born Danish keeper enjoyed his breakthrough with the Yellow Submarine this past season, playing 37 times in La Liga. He made an eye-catching 143 saves—the most in La Liga in 2023/24 season as well as kept six clean sheets. Jorgensen was one of the rare shining lights in an otherwise disappointing campaign for Villarreal that saw them finish eighth on the table and subsequently miss out on a place in Europe.

Chelsea want to move on Kepa Arrizabalaga from their books amid interest from Real Madrid and Saudi Arabia.

Meanwhile, the Blues currently have three senior goalkeepers—Robert Sanchez, Djordje Petrovic and Kepa Arrizabalaga. Sanchez and Petrovic had spells in goal last season, while Kepa was farmed out on loan to Real Madrid. The Pensioners are ready to offload Kepa this summer, with the Spaniard keen on a move back to Real Madrid for the second year running.

Sanchez hasn’t pulled up trees since arriving from Brighton in 2023 and spent a large chunk of last season on the sidelines. While Petrovic deputised well in his absence, Maresca supposedly wants a goalkeeper comfortable with the ball at his feet and has set his sights on Jorgensen.

Jorgensen is a young goalkeeper who has impressed in the Spanish top flight. As he is keen on a move, the 22-year-old could be ideal to provide competition for Sanchez. Chelsea’s opening bid for the Villarreal glovesman clearly suggests our intent to bring him to the club.

Our fans will be hoping to see the club wrap up a deal quickly so that Maresca can work with Jorgensen in the pre-season and evaluate who would be the best option to start the forthcoming campaign as the No.1.
