Chelsea continue pursuit of Elye Wahi

According to L’Équipe, as reported by Football London, Chelsea have regained interest in bringing French striker Elye Wahi to Stamford Bridge this summer.

The France U21 international, also part of Thierry Henry’s France squad for the upcoming Paris Olympics, has been linked with the Blues ever since his Montpellier days, having moved to Lens only last season.

The 21-year-old has already etched his name in the Ligue 1 history books, being only the second teenager after Kylian Mbappé to score 20 or more goals in the league in 40 years.

Chelsea’s interest in Wahi goes back a while.

Valued by Transfermarkt at €35 million, Wahi moved to Lens last summer for €30 million and delivered 12 goals and 4 assists in his first season at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis.

Wahi is currently the highest-paid player on Lens’ books along with Brice Samba, with his €3m-per-year contract set to run until the end of the 2027/28 season, giving Les Sang et Or plenty of room to play hard-ball and maximise their profit on his potential sale.

Yet another experiment?

Wahi is an exceptional talent, which he has been demonstrating for some time.

That said, with Chelsea these days one always ends up asking the question “What’s the point?” every time they are linked with and bring in a new player, and this case is no different.

Chelsea already have a young “project” forward in Nicolas Jackson, and unless their new manager Enzo Maresca is completely unsatisfied with him, or if he chooses to go with two up top, which is a rarity these days, it’s hard to see how Wahi would fit in a squad saturated with talent beyond what is required. It’s very likely that, if he were to arrive, he would get lost in the wilderness of the current chaos.

What Chelsea need upfront is an experienced goal-getter who can take up the responsibility to strengthen Chelsea for the next couple of seasons and help Jackson grow, if the club at all want him to grow.
