Chelsea star Marc Cucurella has been one of the standout performers at Euro 2024 for Spain, who find themselves in the semi-final of the competition. A tussle against France and one of England and Netherlands separates them from winning the competition for the third time in the last five additions and without a doubt, the left-back’s exploits have helped them come so far.
Even though his form on the international level has been impeccable, there have been questions raised regarding his continuity at Chelsea at the back of their interest in acquiring younger full-backs.
The former Barcelona star has all but ruled out departing Stamford Bridge this summer and confirmed his stance in an interview, which has been reported by Football London. Cucurella said the following:
“La Liga is my home, but I’m very happy in England, which is a great experience for me and my family.”
The 25-year-old was one of the Blues’ better players at the backend of last season as they turned around a terrible run of results under Mauricio Pochettino to eventually finish sixth in the Premier League, hence earning a Europa League spot in the process.
And though the Argentinian manager has departed the club, his successor Enzo Maresca is more than likely to count on Cucurella following his fantastic displays at the European Championship. The Spaniard has made Manchester United legend Gary Neville eat his own words after the ex-right-back did not fancy La Roja’s chances with the Chelsea man in the team.
The fact that he has reached the latter stages of the competition might mean he becomes unavailable for pre-season training with Chelsea but that’s not to say that he will not have regained match fitness in time for the start of the Premier League.
Cucurella will be expected to have prominence over Ben Chilwell, at least at the start of the campaign, and the Englishman will have a fair bit of catching up to do if at all he plans on usurping his teammate to a first-choice role in the starting eleven.
Chelsea’s transfer for a new left-back is unlikely to bother Cucurella much as he is only 25 and has his best years ahead.
