Newcastle and Chelsea told £30m price-tag for signing Championship player

Chelsea and Newcastle United are in race to sign James Trafford

According to Metro, Chelsea will have to shell out £30m if they hope to complete the signing of a new goalkeeper James Trafford. However, it won’t be easy as the Blues face competition from Newcastle United for Burnley’s goalkeeper.

The Clarets endured a dismal season in the Premier League and couldn’t manage to remain in the league failing to win games and were relegated. However, Trafford stood out to be a top performer for them and his performance has impressed many big sides from the league.

Chelsea have expressed interest and are ready to move for the 21-year-old who seems to have a high ceiling. The youngster started 28 games for Burnley last season and was dropped as former manager Vincent Kompany preferred Arijanet Muric.

However, the clubs are keen on signing him as they are aware of his talent and given he is just 21 a lot can be expected from him to deliver on the big stage. The Blues currently have Robert Sanchez and Dorde Petrovic, while Kepa Arrizabalaga is set to return to the club after a loan spell at Real Madrid.

Prior to pursuing any other goaltender in the summer, the team must determine which goalie they believe they should sell. We can’t just bring in another custodian and play four of them.

On top of that Chelsea’s new manager, Enzo Maresca confirmed he will be counting on Sanchez next season thus it further clarifies we don’t need any other keeper if the manager is happy with what he has.

Meanwhile, Petrovic will be a great backup for us while the Kepa future will be uncertain as Chelsea are open to selling the goalkeeper in the summer and he has no place in the squad already as he previously made his intention clear when he joined Real Madrid on loan, where he wanted a permanent move.

Therefore, it doesn’t make sense to go for Trafford and he is too young now. He needs to improve certain aspects of the game and we cannot gamble and go for an inexperienced goalkeeper. We should stick with Sanchez and Petrovic for next season.
