Fabrizio Romano confirms that Chelsea’s imminent £19m signing, Omari Kellyman, has completed his medical test as a Blues player and will soon sign a new contract, which is set to be valid until 2030 with an option for a further year.
This might be an odd move for Chelsea fans who wonder about the purpose of signing another attacking midfielder when the Blues already have enough options in the squad. Kellyman hasn’t even made enough Premier League appearances for Aston Villa’s senior side.
The names the Blues are linked with have been quite surprising, and now, given that the West Londoners are set to sign Kellyman, it raises questions about whether he will get meaningful playing time for the first team in the forthcoming season.
Kellyman is surely a talented prospect, but he has been signed for a position that the Blues are already stacked with. It’s becoming quite concerning how the club isn’t upgrading the first team by bringing in more experienced players, as this will only affect the club’s performance again next season.
The last campaign was a solid example of how we struggled to perform consistently and endured another frustrating season but managed to turn it around near the end, finishing sixth in the Premier League table.
It will be interesting to see what the future holds for Kellyman next season in the first-team squad, given he has been awarded a big contract. The Blues will need to decide on his future because breaking into the first team will be really tough.
He could either be used as a backup or sent on loan to another club for further development. Sending him on loan would be a wise decision, as it will help him get more minutes, while remaining at Chelsea will only hinder his progress as a player.
